THINGS THAT FLY
When the very large world became very small, when my world travels were shrunk to one space, when distractions were at a minimum, I returned to simple things: Pens and paper. Paint and scissors and glue. These seemingly disparate works (Birds and Jets) were both created in 2021. The bird paintings were made in Mexico where I observed these species on the hillside adjacent to my seaside aerie. The jets were made on my return to Cape Cod where I’ve been revisiting themes and materials from an earlier creative time. When trying to reconcile my impulse to create two vastly different series of work, one common theme emerged: Things that fly. The isolation of the pandemic, it seems, lit a desire to rise above limited horizons and see the world from altered perspectives. Birds and jets. Two things that do what I cannot do, except in my imagination.
