In March 2023, after a diagnosis of Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), I received a hematopoietic stem cell transplant at a hospital one block away from my former MassArt studio, where I earned an MFA in 1981. Following my three-week hospitalization at BWH, I traveled weekly for follow up exams with my transplant team at Dana Farber, and would nod hello to my old studio window at 364 Brookline Avenue. The drawings evolved from playing with childhood materials, crayons and paper, where one applies bright colors under darker ones, and then scratches through to reveal shapes and images. Not intended to be exact reproductions of cells, the drawings aim to evoke a life-affirming spirit of self-renewal, be it at the cellular, emotional, and even professional level.
